Beaded Leather Pouch

Item No. NA0008

Work: Beaded Leather Pouch

People: [Northern Plains]

Place of Origin: Northern Plains

Date of work: ca. 1860-1880 s

Medium: Glass bead and leather.

Size: Length: 5-3/8" (13.7 cm)
  Width: 3-7/8" (9.9 cm)

Description: A flat soft leather pouch with a soft leather strap, beautifully

decorated with an unusual design in multicolored beadwork. The beadwork trims the top rim as well as the outline of the pouch. The face is decorated with equally spaced, concentrically oriented lines of intermittently sown beads, and a central symbolic motif of solid beadwork. The back of the pouch is plain leather, well patinated and what appears to be natural tanning from probable contact with the wearer’s skin.

JMBG Notes:

This is a wonderful piece of Native American handiwork.

The unusual beadwork design has been difficult to find. In our research, we have come across only one example of the central motif (on a leather shirt) which helped us to classify the pouch as Northern Plains. Unfortunately, we have not been able to identify any specific tribe.

Condition: Overall very good condition, with a fine age patina. Some

bead losses at top right back rim, and few individual beads from the bead lines on the front. Two small wear spots on front leather.

Conservation: The loose ends of threads where bead loss had occurred

were tied off with single knots, and stabilized with tiny amounts of polyvinyl acetate adhesive.

Provenance: Private collection.

Price: $485.00 US
