| Description: |
Victorian
cast bronze miniature sculpture, cold-painted in |
| |
brown
and black. Much of the paint has been worn off on the
high points of the
surface. |
| |
|
| Notes: |
Around the year 1850, small miniature bronzes of exquisite
|
| |
detail,
such as this one, became a fad with Victorian people. Many were
produced in small shops of Vienna, Austria even into the early 20th
century. These pieces were cold-painted (hand-painted after the
casting was finished without submitting it to further heat process.
Consequently the paint usually shows considerable wear. The mark
GESCHUTZT means “protected” in German, something like today’s
“copyright”. Those marked GESCHUZTZ only date before 1883. Thereafter,
the stamps VIENNA and/or AUSTRIA were added. |

|
| Presentation:
|
Loose item, unmounted.
|
| |
|
| Condition: |
Very
fine. Much of the original paint remains primarily in |
| |
the recesses and protected areas of the casting,
whereas it has been worm away on the high surfaces, resulting in a
beautifully textured appearance. The worn bronze surfaces have the
appearance of rich gilt high-lights. The mouth interior appears to
have been silvered. The very tip of the tail and the back surface of
the rear-most foot show more wear than the overall piece. |
