Description:

The Totem consists of two portions. The lower part is a

single piece wooden post decorated with hand carved scroll designs in a segmental arrangement, with most of the decoration concentrated on the front of the totem. The upper segment of the post depicts a human face. The upper portion, which is mounted on a peg of the post, and is detachable, consists again of two parts, the one a horizontal ornamental bar finished with end scrolls, and an attached finial in the form of a seated human figure with a head-dress.

The lower-most segment shows soiling, this being the portion of the totem originally implanted in the ground. The Tetum people planted their ancestral spirit totems at the door of their dwellings, believing them to protect them from evil.
