Description: This is possibly a piece of chair ornamentation. There are
 

three peg holes in the cheeks and the neck for attachment. Two of the three original wooden pegs are still inside the cheek holes, the one in the neck is missing. The number 231 is inscribed on the back in pencil.

   
Presentation: Mounted on a professionally made black Lucite stand, but not
  attached to it, so it can be easily removed for examination.
   
Condition: The wood is cracked along its grain vertically just left of the
  nose, with a couple of minor age cracks on the right side. The surface was most likely once painted, but no trace of paint remains. The surface is weathered showing the wood grain clearly. The very nose tip was chipped off perhaps still during the chairs use, and it has been well worn. The major features of the face remain prominent.
   
Provenance: Prominent Private Collection, Bratenahl, Ohio. Originally
  purchased ca. 1950’ to 1960’ from Parke Bernet Gallery, (eventually incorporated into Sotheby’s), New York. Note: Further provenance available only upon purchase.
