In this icon, Saint Nicholas is depicted in a large

relief, surmounted by a smaller image of Christ and
surrounded by the images of the apostles and various saints. The text
is in old Russian. |

Brass plaque icons were commonly made by the lost wax
|
| |
technique, using molds made out of sand. These icons
were made as either single-panel, as this one, or often as
triple-panel, with smaller hinged side sections that closed as doors.
These icons were usually taken along on travels. |

Very good, with nice patina. Very nice detail, with

some of the high points of the relief worn through long use. |
